President Donald Trump admitted that a recent call with Russian President Vladimir Putin would not lead to "immediate peace" in Ukraine, despite saying he could end the war in one day before the 2024 election.

"I just finished speaking, by telephone, with President Vladimir Putin, of Russia," Trump revealed in a Wednesday post on his Truth Social platform. "We discussed the attack on Russia's docked airplanes, by Ukraine, and also various other attacks that have been taking place by both sides. It was a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate Peace."

"President Putin did say, and very strongly, that he will have to respond to the recent attack on the airfields," he added.

Over the weekend, Ukraine reportedly destroyed or damaged one-third of Russia's strategic bomber fleet in a covert operation involving drones.

Trump did not say whether he responded to Putin's threat of retaliation against Ukraine. Instead, the U.S. president changed the subject to Iran.

"I stated to President Putin that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon and, on this, I believe that we were in agreement," Trump wrote. "President Putin suggested that he will participate in the discussions with Iran and that he could, perhaps, be helpful in getting this brought to a rapid conclusion."

According to Trump, the call with Putin lasted over an hour.
