As President Donald Trump announced his new $175 billion Golden Dome missile defense system was a go, critics took to social media to blast the idea.

"Trump says we’re going to spend $175 BILLION on a 'Golden Dome' to protect us from… *checks notes* — Canada and Mexico, presumably? Endless waste, enriching his friends — as we cut health care for regular people, seniors… But keep telling us they care about the debt," posted The Tennessee Holler.

During Trump's announcement from the Oval Office Tuesday afternoon, Trump claimed "Canada has called us and they want to be a part of it. So, we'll be talking to them. They want to have protection, also. So, as usual, we help Canada. Do the best we can."

Journalist Aaron Rupar called out Trump for promoting a "lie" over the cost.

"REPORTER: Critics said a golden dome would be prohibitively expensive," Rupar wrote. "TRUMP: We can afford to do it. You know, we took in $5.1 trillion in the last four days in the Middle East. (This is a lie, as we detailed today in Public Notice).

Political analyst Rachel Bitecofer wrote, "I can’t believe the Golden Dome is a real plan. It would cost like 40 trillion dollars to build. Israel is the size of New Jersey."

Digital activist group Anonymous wrote, "Trumps new Golden Dome project is another money laundering scheme to transfer billions in US tax payer money to Musk, Peter Thiel and more of his backers. They aren’t being picked on merit or innovation, it’s just more fraud."

The BlueSky account of News Eye posted, "He wants a 'golden dome' as part of 'One Big Beautiful Bill.' That anyone entertained this man will be utterly inexplicable to future generations."
