EU approves draft Mercosur trade deal with ‘robust’ protections for farmers

The European Commission gave its final go-ahead to the Mercosur agreement and called on member states to approve the trade agreement with the Latin American countries. France was one of the more reluctant members due to concerns about local farmers, but the commission insisted that it would provide "protection for all EU sensitivities in the agricultural sector."
