Death toll nearly doubled in Dominican nightclub collapse: report

The death toll in a roof collapse at a nightclub in the Dominican Republic has nearly doubled since initial reports.

Dust started falling from the ceiling early Tuesday legendary Jet Set club in Santo Domingo, which was packed with musicians, professional athletes and government officials, before the roof suddenly collapsed, killing at least 124 people, reported the Associated Press.

Many were killed instantly, with dozens reported dead shortly after the collapse, and at least 250 people were hurt.

Victims include merengue legend Rubby Pérez, who had been performing before the disaster, and longtime MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel, Dominican ballplayer Tony Blanco, and Satosky Terrero, spokesperson for the country’s Professional Baseball League.

Rescue crews, including teams from Puerto Rico and Israel, are still searching for survivors more than 24 hours after the collapse.

Officials said Wednesday they have rescued 145 survivors from the wreckage.
